The age of the machines has reached coffee-making. Espresso machines in bars and restaurants are the norm in many countries – at least the European ones that I am familiar with. Some Nordic countries however have a reverse salient when it comes to regular coffee. Order a cappuccino, a café latte, espresso, ristretto or what have you, and they’ll use the espresso machine to prepare it. Order a plain black coffee and you’ll be poured a mug from the can of ready-made coffee, which, in cases of severely bad luck, has been there for hours busy transferring the coffee into bitter liquid tar whereas more often than not the coffee was not so good to begin with. I mean, the only even worse coffee one can get is mixed with milk – but that’s another rant.
Today in Malmö, I discovered the first exception to the Nordic regular coffee rule : Café Grue on Kärleksgatan 1 serves plain black coffee from the espresso machine.
